About Us

Our History

J & J Franks (Franks) has been established for over 80 years and are proud to be Surrey’s largest independently owned Quarrying and Waste management company.

John and Joseph Franks started the business as a haulage company at the start of the 1940’s and in the 1950s, purchased the Betchworth Sand Quarry to provide high quality building sand to the construction industry in the South. The company was acquired by P Crate Ltd in 1963, with the current Managing Director being a third generation P (Peter) Crate.

Franks, has evolved into an integrated recycling, waste management and aggregates business, servicing a wide range of commercial and domestic customers. We continue to invest in equipment at our sites in Betchworth and Nutfield to improve the range and quality of services that we are able to offer.

J and J Franks Services

At Betchworth, where our head office is located, we have a fully permitted recycling and materials recovery plant, where we focus on being environmental responsible in managing waste. At this site we are able to provide a number of waste disposal services such as skip, grab hire and muck away services.

In 2018, we began operations at our vast new strategic sand extraction and landfill site (Mercers Quarry) near Nutfield, East Surrey. From here we are able to support building and civil engineering projects for the region. Nutfield Sand has rapidly become a sought after material used as a component for bricklaying mortar, asphalt, soil screening products and brick manufacture.
