John and Joseph Franks started the business as a haulage company at the start of the 1940’s and in the 1950s purchased the Betchworth Sand Quarry to provide high quality building sand to the construction industry in the South. The company was acquired by P Crate Ltd in 1963 with the current Managing Director being a third generation P (Peter) Crate.
In 2005 FRANKS was the first solely inert waste site to successfully achieve a Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations Permit (PPC).
J & J Franks (FRANKS) remains determinedly independent as we complete our evolution into a fully integrated quarrying and waste solutions business.
We are committed to making a positive contribution to the communities within which we operate. In 2008 we opened our £2 million state of the art recycling and materials recovery plant and extended head office building at Betchworth. This development will provide additional employment opportunities for local people and underpin the high quality of products and services we offer to our customers.
In 2016-2018 we will begin operations at our vast new strategic sand extraction and landfill site near Nutfield, East Surrey. From here we will be able to support building and civil engineering projects for the region as well as providing a stable source of high quality building sands for our manufacturers of ceramics, glass, asphalt and bricks.
We are looking forward to the next 75 years with confidence.
Licensing, Accreditations & Standards
We at Franks are very serious about compliance with all applicable health and safety, road transport and environmental standards. We regard it as our responsibility to safeguard the environment and to ensure that our customers’ waste is disposed of in a safe and lawful manner. To this end we have invested in computer systems that record and monitor all waste entering our site and provide information that will allow our customers to audit their waste output. FRANKS operates a rigorous health and safety regime for all driver, site staff, contractors and visitors.
Sadly our industry has its fair share of rogue companies who flaunt or ignore the law. Help us to stop this – when you engage a waste management company demand to see their credentials…we are happy to publish ours:
It is often possible to combine sand deliveries with muck-away services for added efficiency and cost saving.
