John and Joseph Franks started the business as a haulage company in 1942 and in the 1950s purchased the Betchworth Sand Quarry to provide high quality building sand to the construction industry in the South. The company was acquired by P Crate Ltd in 1963 and has been in private hands ever since, with the current Managing Director being a third generation P (Peter) Crate.

J & J Franks (FRANKS) remains determinedly independent as we complete our evolution into a fully integrated quarrying and waste solutions business.

We now supply building sand and recycled aggregates in bulk or bagged form to local, regional and national builders and civil engineers. Our waste solutions operation provides skip containers, tippers with grab loaders, Rolonofs, compactors, landfill and recycling to customers in the Surrey, South London and surrounding areas.

In 2005 FRANKS was the first solely inert waste site to successfully achieve a Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations Permit (PPC) which allows us to dispose of non-recyclable waste to landfill.

We are committed to making a positive contribution to the communities within which we operate. In 2008 we will open our £2 million state of the art recycling and materials recovery plant and extended head office building at Betchworth. This development will provide additional employment opportunities for local people and underpin the high quality of products and services we offer to our customers.

We regard it as our responsibility to safeguard the environment and to ensure that our customers’ waste is disposed of in a safe and lawful manner. To this end we have invested in computer systems that record and monitor all waste entering our site and provide information that will allow our customers to audit their waste output. FRANKS operates a rigorous health and safety regime for all driver, site staff, contractors and visitors.
